With glossy pictures and witty copy, they seem to get it. They are real bloggers, right?

Is there also room for potential bloggers like you and me?

Short answer? Yup!

According to WordPress, nearly 409 million people view more than 20 billion pages every month. There are many opportunities. If you’re looking to break into the blogosphere (or increase the success of your already established blog), you might think you need a lot of luck to make it happen. But there is no need to buy lottery tickets or make wishes on shooting stars. You just need some expert advice.

Fortunately, we have plenty of it.

We’ve done the legwork for you, talking to a web blogging elite and gathering their top tips. And writing blog posts is just getting started; as well as creating content, bloggers need to optimize for search engines, spend time on social media, market their content, network and interact with readers.

For design guru Emily Henderson, running a blog is not even a feat to forget.

“I had to make it a top priority or it wouldn’t have been done,” said the full-time blogger. “Now I have staff who help keep it running on a daily basis and we fill it with original content every day.”

Not being fully engaged is what separates amateur bloggers from professionals.

“I think the main mistake I see in new bloggers is not to commit fully to what they do,” said Jill Nystul, industry expert and creator of One Good Thing Jillee’s phenomenology blog. “You can’t do anything halfway in the blogging industry and I expect to be successful. I see a lot of people starting blogs, posting a few things over a few months and then wondering why not get traffic, publish schedule and show your readers that you are committed to consistently delivering great content.

2. Invest in good equipment

When you decide to start a blog, use all the tools at your disposal to get the ball rolling. But when you are financially capable, your blog will benefit from having access to some professional tools.

“The look of my blog definitely improved when I invested in a real camera rather than my phone, which I totally did in the early days of my blog,” says Nystul. “And you don’t have to spend a fortune. We still use Canon Rebel and it works great.”

Some other popular blogging tools: WordPress software, Adobe Suite, web hosting package, email marketing software, and useful plugins. The more professional and composed your blog, the more trust you will gain from readers.

3. Your mission (if you choose to write it)

You have a burning passion for blogging, right? First, breathe.

It is essential that you understand a few things first, such as what your blog is about and what you want to do with it. Having a fun blog is a good goal, but let’s go deeper.

Have you ever heard of a mission statement? It is commonly used by companies to identify values, goals and purposes, usually in a few easy-to-remember sentences. And it’s critical to the success of your blog.

“I wish I had found my mission sooner,” Jepsen said. “But I started it at a time when bloggers weren’t making money and I didn’t know it was a trajectory I could take, so I didn’t write it accordingly. If you want to make money, you will write differently than someone. Who does it for fun only. Create a bespoke mission statement to know what your content should be and who your audience is. ”

Brittany Watson Jepsen found the key to consistency for success when she started her blog.

“I think one of the best things you can do as a blogger is to keep your content consistent and consistent,” Jepsen says. “Even when I started nine years ago, I was working on my blog every day. My team uses CoSchedule for our editorial calendar and we love it. It helps keep us extremely organized and on the same page even when we are all working remotely. One or two other things we love are Slack for messaging and Wunderlist for to-do lists.

There are a number of useful tools available online for job planning and scheduling.

“An important key is to have a plan for what you want to publish rather than sit back and write every time,” said Syed Balkhi, founder of WPBeginner’s technical support site. “Tools like Asana or the WordPress Edit Flow plugin are great for pre-planning blog postings.”
